What’s the result? The finished bags look nothing like what you wanted: the colors are off, the details are blurry, and the texture is gone… It’s frustrating. The design was so beautiful, why did it turn out so different?
So today, I’ve decided to share some real printing information and help you understand the seven common printing processes on the market for coffee bags. They are screen printing, gravure printing, UV printing, offset printing, digital printing, heat transfer, and foil stamping (gold/silver). If you can understand their principles, characteristics and suitable scenarios, I’m sure you that next time you can confidently say, “I want to use XX process!” instead of passively accepting bad results in the final products.

1.Screen Printing. “The Texture Master”. The ink layers is really thick enough to feel!
Summary: Like a “sieve,” ink is squeezed through the mesh onto the material, suitable for designs with a three-dimensional feel and high saturation.
How It Works:
A stencil with the pattern (like a sieve) is made firstly, and the ink is pushed through the mesh holes by a squeegee, only landing where you want it. The entire process is somewhat like DIY hand-painting T-shirts.
Advantages:
Extremely thick ink layers (up to 30μm), rich colors, and strong three-dimensional effects.
Can print on almost any material: plastic films, metals, glass, paper, etc.
Durable against sun and scratches, ideal for outdoor usage.
Disadvantages:
Not suitable for fine details or complex gradients.
Inefficient for multi-color printing, higher costs.
Suitable for Coffee Bags?
If you want localized highlights, rugged textures, or small-batch customizations, such as limited-edition pour-over coffee packaging, screen printing is a good choice! However, it’s not cost-effective for large-scale production.
2.Gravure Printing. “The King of High-End Soft Packaging” It is preferred for large batches!
Summary: The printing plate has recessed areas where ink is held, which is then transferred under high pressure to ensure stable colors, high efficiency and durability for millions of prints.
How It Works:
The images on the printing plate are recessed into small pits. As the roller rotates, ink fills these pits, excess ink is wiped off, and then the ink from the pits is transferred to the material under pressure.
Advantages:
Thick ink layers, vibrant colors and extremely high color fidelity.
Suitable for high-speed continuous printing, capable of running tens of thousands of meters in a day!
High durability, perfect for million-unit orders.
Good anti-counterfeiting properties; even banknotes use this method.
Disadvantages:
Expensive plate-making, not cost-effective for small batches.
Long plate-making cycles, making design changes cumbersome.
Suitable for Coffee Bags?
Absolutely suitable! Especially if you’re doing aluminum foil composite bags or metallized bags, and your order volume is large (e.g., over 5,000 units), gravure printing is the industry standard, offering the best balance of quality and cost.
3.UV Printing “Instant Curing Technology”
Summary: To use ultraviolet light to instantly cure the ink, drying immediately after printing, providing high gloss, eco-friendliness, and no delays in production.
How It Works:
UV ink is liquid when applied but it solidifies within seconds under UV lights using UV lamps or LED cold light sources.
Advantages:
Rapid curing, high efficiency, no need to wait for ink to dry.
Highly glossy, giving a premium look.
Eco-friendly, with virtually zero volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Can print on various non-absorbent materials like plastics, metals, and glass.
Disadvantages:
High equipment and ink costs.
Adhesion issues on certain materials.
Sometimes inferior color reproduction compared to gravure printing.
Suitable for Coffee Bags?
If you want localized UV effects, such as shiny logos or raised text, it can be combined with gravure/offset printing. However, full-surface UV printing on coffee bags isn’t mainstream yet due to high costs.
4.Offset Printing. “King of Paper Printing” But it is not ideal for soft packaging compared with others!
Summary: To utilize the principle that oil and water don’t mix, applying water first, then ink, transferring the image via a rubber blanket onto paper.
Advantages:
Clear graphics, precise color reproduction.
Ideal for paper-based printing, such as coffee bean boxes, drip coffee bag outer boxes.
Moderate costs, mature technology.
Disadvantages:
Not suitable for non-absorbent materials like plastic films.
Requires powder spraying to prevent sticking, affecting texture.
Thin ink layers lack a “heavy” feel.
Suitable for Coffee Bags?
Not suitable for direct printing on soft packaging bags! However, if you’re making paper boxes, drip coffee bag outer boxes, or brand manuals, offset printing is the preferred choice.
5.Digital Printing. “On-Demand Customization Wizard” it is the savior for small batches!
Summary: Like a printer, digital files are directly output without plate making, ready immediately, and each sheet can be different!
Advantages:
Zero plate making costs, suitable for orders starting from one unit.
Supports personalization: each bag can have different names, origin stories, etc.
Quick sampling, convenient for testing market reactions.
Eco-friendly, minimal waste.
Disadvantages:
Higher per-unit costs for large batches.
Thinner ink layers, slightly lower color saturation than gravure printing.
Slightly weaker wear resistance and weatherability.
Suitable for Coffee Bags?
Perfect for startup brands, limited editions, or co-branded products!
For example, if you want to do a “City Limited Series,” with only 300 units per version, digital printing is your best bet.
6.Heat Transfer. “Universal Sticker” it is very suitable for complex shapes!
Summary: First, print the pattern on transfer paper, then use high temperature and pressure to “transfer” it onto the material, like “sticking a film.”
Advantages:
Can print on curved or irregular surfaces (like cups, bottles).
Vibrant colors, high color fidelity.
Suitable for small batches and personalized customization.
Disadvantages:
Adds an extra layer, slightly “plastic-like” texture.
May peel off with long-term exposure to sunlight or friction.
Not cheap.
Suitable for Coffee Bags?
Generally not used on mainstream coffee bags, but if you’re doing creative gift boxes, metal cans, or irregular packaging, it could be considered.
7.Foil Stamping (Gold/Silver) “The Luxurious Finishing Touch!”
Summary: Use metallic foil to create shiny text or patterns, instantly elevating the package’s class!
How It Works:
A heated metal die applies pressure to transfer gold or silver foil onto the packaging, and after cooling, excess foil is removed.
Advantages:
Metallic luster, exuding luxury.
Strong three-dimensional effect, with delicate details.
Has anti-counterfeiting functions, commonly used on high-end products.
Suitable for Coffee Bags?
Highly recommended!
Even just adding a touch of foil stamping to the logo or brand name can instantly raise the overall quality of coffee packages. Many specialty coffee brands use this process.
